Ari Vatanen, the President of Mobility for Prosperity in Europe was interviewed on the occasion of the Opening Session of the IRF World Meeting in Lisbon.

Following the meeting’s Opening Ceremony under the High Patronage of Anibal António Cavaco Silva, President of the Republic of Portugal, the 2 first Plenary Sessions took place which were both opened and moderated by Vatanen.
(Please find more on the highlights of the Opening Day Sessions on http://www.irf2010blog.com/?p=155).

The theme of the first session was Mobility, Transport & Infrastructure and was guided by the lead question what the reasons for the clear mismatch between mobility supply and demand are. The high-level participants of the session, e.g. Ari Vatanen from MPE (moderator), Susan Martinovich from AASHTO, Jean-Luc Mate, Continental and Jack Short (of whom a recorded interview was shown), identified among others that in Europe the consumer demands more roads, but that sectors is just getting a fraction of the public sector resources than rail does.

In the second session - Road Safety - moderated by Ari Vatanen,  the participants Antonio Avenose from ETSC, Jordi Follia from the Region of Catalunia and Anthony Kane from AASHTO discussed the question: How road safety is progressing in the EU and US? It was identified that both, in the EU and US there are significant disparities in the figures regarding road deaths from State to State or Country and that in order to reduce the number of road deaths, measures regarding automated speed enforcement, the harmonization of Laws and infrastructure improvements need to be introduced.
